Management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has donated medical consumables worth to GHC200,000 to 10 hospitals in Ashanti region.
The donation, according to management of the University, forms part of their corporate social responsibility towards giving back to hospitals in the region who support the University’s training of medical students for years in their facilities.
The medical consumables donated to the hospitals included, 1,000 boxes of Surgical gloves, 500 boxes of disposable caps, 500 packs of disposal boots, 3,000 pieces of hand sanitizers and 5,000 boxes of examination gloves.
KNUST hospital had 50 Boxes of Surgical gloves, 54 boxes of disposable caps, 173 pieces of hand sanitizers and 288 boxes of examinations gloves.
South Suntreso hospital also received 50 Boxes of Surgical gloves, 54 boxes of disposable caps, 54 packs of disposal boots, 183 pieces of hand sanitizers and 308 boxes of Examination Gloves. The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospitals also had 686 boxes of surgical gloves, 141 Boxes of disposal caps, 141 packs of disposal boots, 1500 pieces of hand sanitizers and 2,500 boxes of examination gloves among other hospitals.
Vice Chancellors of KNUST Prof. Obiri Danso while addressing the media at a ceremony said, the university has started signing MOUs with private and government hospitals with standard facilities to train medical students from the University. This he believe will reduce the congestion at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital where majority of their students go for their training.
“Currently we train thousands of medical students yearly made up of medical doctors, dentist, pharmacist, midwives, medical laboratory technicians among others. We have partnered Komfo Anokye for years and the hospital is gradually becoming smaller to admit all our students for training because of our increasing numbers. We intend to increase number of medical students going forward therefore it has become needful to partner other hospitals in the region with the required standard to train our students as well. We have signed MOU with Asokwa Childrens hospital and Hope hospital and very soon we will add more,’’ he disclosed.
He added, “as a university they have realised that the training of the medical students in other health facilities are draining the hospital in provision of medical consumables hence the need to support the hospitals halfway so they will come comfortable any time we send our students there’’.
Dr. Kwadwo Sarbeng of Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital after receiving their share of the medical consumables on behalf of others hospitals commended management of KNUST for the support.
“Looking at the days we were in medical school our number was 65 but now there are over 200 of them in the university now, meaning the number is seriously growing high. Now when you come to the hospital people have started expressing concern about use of consumables in the facility by the trainees so I think this donation will go a long way to help us is training our students. On behalf of all the hospitals that received these consumables we want thank you for your continued support. We hope more will follow soon,” Dr Sarbeng acknowledged.
