Investigators have made significant progress in the ongoing probe into the tragic death of Joana Deladem Yabani, as the police and university security services have successfully retrieved her laptop and mobile phone.
According to a statement from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the items were discovered hidden behind the Flint Hostel. Their location was identified through CCTV footage from the hostel’s security surveillance system, providing crucial evidence to aid in the prosecution process.
Joana Deladem Yabani, a student of KNUST, was reported missing earlier this month. Her disappearance sparked concerns among students and the university community, leading to an extensive search. Days later, her lifeless body was discovered under suspicious circumstances, prompting authorities to launch an investigation into the cause of her death.
The incident sent shockwaves across campus, raising concerns about student safety and security measures. Students and the general public have since been demanding justice, with calls for increased security and surveillance around hostels and other vulnerable areas on campus.
Following the discovery of Yabani’s belongings, the suspect in custody was arraigned before the Circuit Court in Asafo on February 28, 2025. The court remanded the suspect into custody, with the next hearing scheduled for March 17, 2025. Authorities at KNUST and the Ghana Police Service have reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring justice is served.
The university management expressed gratitude to security personnel and law enforcement agencies for their swift action. They also urged students, staff, and the general public to remain calm and allow the legal process to take its course.
KNUST assured the public that it is prioritizing student safety and taking steps to enhance surveillance measures on campus.
“Our thoughts remain with the family, friends, and loved ones of Joana Deladem Yabani during this difficult time,” the statement concluded.
