The Ashanti Regional branch of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has today confirmed Akwasi Amankwa, popularly known as ‘Tom Cee’ as the party’s parliamentary candidate to lead the party into 23rd May 2023 By-election.
Akwasi Amankwa brother to Dr. Kwabena Duffour NDC Presidential Candidate hopeful is the sole parliamentary candidate who picked and filed his nomination when the party opened nominations.
After successful vetting, the party’s elections committee cleared him to contest and has been acclaimed.
The acclamation of Kwasi Amankwaa as the NDC’s Parliamentary candidate for the Sekyere Kumawu Constituency by-election was graced by former Finance Minister Dr. Kwabena Duffuor who is contesting to become the NDC flagbearer for election 2024.
Other members included Joseph Yamin, National Chairman of the party Johnson Asiedu Nketia, among others.
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, on 3rd April 2023 declared the Kumawu, seat vacant.
The decision followed the death of the MP, Philip Basoah, 53, on March 27, 2023.
Addressing party members after declaring Kwasi Amankwah as the party’s Parliamentary candidate for the by-lection, Johnson Asiedu Nketia urged the people of Kumawu to stop voting for the NPP which has failed to develop the area when in power and vote the NDC to bring development to the constituency.
NDC’s Flag bearer hopeful Dr. Kwabene Duffour, who graced the occasion as special guest pledged his support to the candidate who he described as brother.
He entreated Kumawu electorate to change hands from always voting for the NPP which has never demonstrated serious commitment of directing development to the constituency.
Kwasi Amankwa is his speech commended the party leadership for having confidence in him to lead the party into the 23rd may 2023 crucial by-election.
He urged Kumawu resident to rally behind him to show the ruling party that Ghanaians are disappointed in their performance.
Despite the strong command the NPP and independent parliamentary candidate control in the constituency based on 2020 election results, the NDC is confident of winning the by-election with Kwasi Amoako whom the party describe as Kumawu Savior.
The ruling New Patriotic party (NPP) on Sunday April 23rd 2023 elected Ernest Yaw Anim as the party’s parliamentary candidate for the by-election.
An independent candidate Kwaku Duah who caused surprise in the 2020 general election by securing 11,698 representing 39% of the total votes against then incumbent NPP’s candidate Philip Basoah who secured 14,960 representing 51.11% is also campaigning the constituency to contest the election.
