The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has urged Ghana’s political leaders to refrain from politicising the acquisition of presidential jets and military helicopters, stressing that the focus must be on safety and operational efficiency rather than partisan debates.
His comment follows the tragic helicopter crash which claimed eight distinguished lives in line of duty to the nation on Wednesday, August 6, 2025 at Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region.
Among them were former Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Alhaji Dr. Murtala Mohammed, Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Samuel Aboagye, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flight Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
Speaking at the Manhyia Palace on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, during a visit by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the King described the recent military helicopter crash, which claimed eight lives, as a national tragedy that should trigger urgent action.
“Enough of the politicising of the purchase of presidential planes and helicopters. Human lives are at stake here. We must invest to safeguard their safety and efficiency,” Otumfuo said.
The King expressed concern over the current state of Ghana’s fleet, noting that many of the military aircraft were unfit for long-term use.
He lamented that previous efforts to procure replacements had failed, stressing that the issue must be treated as one of national interest and not political convenience.
Otumfuo extended his condolences to President John Dramani Mahama and the bereaved families, urging unity in addressing the country’s aviation and security challenges.
He emphasised that Ghana must invest in modern aviation assets to ensure both national security and operational readiness.

Meanwhile, two victims were earlier buried in line with Islamic tradition, while the remaining six will receive full military honours at Friday’s State funeral.
