Lawmakers are not terrorists to warrant military presence in the chamber – Adam Bonaa

A security analyst, Dr. Adam Bonaa says the military is to handle external aggressions and territorial integrity not to show up in parliament when there is a little chaos in the Chamber.

A five-member panel of the Supreme Court chaired by the Chief Justice has granted a stay of execution of the ruling of the Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin to declare the seats of four Members of Parliament (MPs) vacant over the switch of allegiance following an ex parte application by the majority leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin.

This follows Alban Bagbin officially declaring four parliamentary seats vacant. The affected constituencies are Amenfi Central, Fomena, Agona West, and Suhum.

A formal petition was submitted to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin by Haruna Iddrisu, a prominent Member of Parliament from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and former Minority Leader.

In an interview with GHOne TV, Dr. Bonaa stated that the police slept within the chambers of parliament last night to ensure that, no criminal came in to plant harmful a weapon in the chamber ahead of today’s sitting.

Communicating, he said, “this arrangement was out of the remit of the military present in parliament today except for the canine unit of the Ghana Armed Forces “whose role was to ensure there were no explosives or harmful chemicals around the house with the help of their canine dogs popularly known as sniffers.”

Dr. Bonaa said he does not expect the military to interfere in any little dispute in parliament. He explains that the police are capable of handling such issues and the military was not trained to do that.

“The military are not trained to do that their work predominantly to handle external aggressions and our territorial integrity matters and so this issue has to do with parliament and its internal matters, the police are more than capable. Parliamentarians are not terrorists, parliamentarians are just like me and you, they agree and disagree, and we know that it is now an issue that has to do with the two organs of government, the legislature and the judiciary”.
