Private legal practitioner and NDC Akwatia Constituency Secretary, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, has emerged victorious in the party’s parliamentary primary ahead of the September 2 by-election.
Bediako polled 380 votes to clinch the slot, narrowly edging past his closest rival Erasmus Koney Ali, popularly known as Asanka, who garnered 366 votes.
Henry Boakye Yiadom, alias Okoyo, placed third with 226 votes.
The Eastern Regional Director of the Electoral Commission declared Bediako winner after Sunday’s polls, which followed the death of sitting MP Ernest Yaw Kumi.
He is set to face off with the NPP’s Nana Kwame Solomon Asumadu in what is expected to be a closely contested by-election.
Although the primary was largely peaceful, dissatisfaction has surfaced among Asanka’s camp, with some of his supporters threatening to back the NPP candidate in protest.
