Amnesty International has stated that the LGBT bill when passed will empower the police to arrest innocent Ghanaians.
This comes on the back of the Commission of Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) advocating a revision of sections of the proposed promotion of Proper Human Rights and Ghanaian Family Value Bill 2021 also known as the Anti-LGBTQ bill.
The Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference has also voiced out their support for the bill and also emphasized that criminalizing sexual orientation of individuals is wrong.
Speaking on Starr Today with Joshua Kojo Mensah, the Country Director for Amnesty International Genevieve Partington stated that the bill has no legs and should not be in Parliament in any form or sharp.
“It will instigate a lot of discrimination and will push the powers of the Police, already Police exert some form of power on its citizens already so this is going to give the Police another excuse to act in a different way and target a certain population.
“Now, if you are walking a certain way, or if you wear your hair a certain way or wear a certain kind of shoes you can be targeted as LGBTI member and that is a very dangerous thing. So this bill does not only affect the LGBTI community, it affects every single Ghanaian and we must all be concerned,” madam Partington stated.
She commended the Attorney General and CHRAJ for their bold steps taken on the bill.
“The bill flouts all international human rights laws and our own Ghanaian Constitution and so should not even be in existence. So I am praying that once they find the potholes and it goes for third reading the Parliamentarians will consider that it should not be passed,” she added.
