Some irate youth at Madina, a suburb in the Greater Accra region have locked up the offices of Supabet – a betting company – over non-payment of their winnings.
The agitated youth prevented workers and management of the betting company from accessing the office and have threatened to ransack the office if they refuse to pay them their winnings by close of day today.
Some of the angry youth who spoke to Starr News Josephine Asabea Akonor said the Madina branch owes them close to Ghc300, 000.
According to the youth, the company after several deliberations have refused to pay them and are refusing to even engage them. They also claim the company is attempting to use the Police service to intimidate them.
“If they don’t give me my money, they will never open this office…If by tomorrow I don’t get my money, I will call my people and they will come and break down this place and ransack their properties, ”a young man known as P. Diddy who claims he is owed over GHc10, 000 said.
They claim that the company has paid some other winners but have failed to pay their monies even though they acknowledge that they won the bet.
A Nigerian who spoke to Starr News said he is owed GHC25, 000 after he won all his bets on Saturday. They claim that the company made over 1 billion Ghana cedis over the weekend and wonder why Supabet is refusing to hand out their winnings.
Starr News has gathered that the failure of Supabet to pay the winnings stems from the advertising of the odds of a game in Brazil, that had already been played allowing patrons to place bets with knowledge of the result.
Attempts to reach management of Supabet for a response has proved futile despite several attempts by Starr News.
