Former president John Dramani Mahama has called for calm in Bole following Wednesday’s clashes.
The clash, which was caused by a chieftaincy dispute, led to the destruction of properties including houses and vehicles.
In a statement issued by his office Thursday, Mr. Mahama who is also the NDC’s Flagbearer called on the Bole chieftaincy factions to cooperate with the mediation committee established by the Gonja Traditional Council to work quickly towards resolving the dispute.
“We need peace to guarantee the safety of all in Bole. Any disruption of the peace will affect not only the protagonists but the children and women in particular”, he noted.
President Mahama also noted that the sad development in Bole is not a good signal to send after the newly and recently inaugurated Savanna Region.
“Let us cooperate with the authorities and security services to ensure peace and development of the area,” he added.
A dusk to dawn (6pm to 6am) curfew has been imposed on Bole after the violence during Eid-Ul-Fitr prayers Wednesday.
Security has been beefed up in the area following the clashes after one of the rival chiefs Alhaji Abukari Abusuapinin return to Bole on Tuesday. The police managed to rescue him to his place at Damongo, where he has been since 2018.
Background
Early this year, a misunderstanding between the feuding chiefs of Bole led to the death of one person and several others injured.
That incident was said to have forced Abudu Abubakar, who was allegedly enskined by the Yagbonwura, to relocate to Damongo.
His rival, Abdulai issahaku Kant, who is the favourite of the people, was declared by the Northern Regional House of Chiefs and a High Court as the rightful owner to the skin.
Abdulai Issahaku Kant was subsequently enskined as Bolewura.
