The Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Cares, is now fully operational, providing support for patients battling non-communicable diseases (NCDs) while also investing in critical healthcare infrastructure.
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are chronic medical conditions that are not passed from person to person. They include illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and chronic respiratory diseases, which often require long-term treatment and specialized care.

Since its inception, Mahama Cares has been supporting individuals living with NCDs, helping them afford the often prohibitive costs of treatment and ensuring access to quality healthcare services.
In addition to patient support, Mahama Cares is funding the construction of state-of-the-art cardiology centres at three major teaching hospitals:
- Korle Bu Teaching Hospital
- Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital
- Tamale Teaching Hospital
These centres will include:
- Modern catheterization laboratories
- Operating theatres
- Intensive care units (ICUs)
- Consulting rooms
- Pharmacies
- Dedicated oxygen plants

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State for Government Communication, shared the update on X on Monday, February 23, 2026, highlighting both the design of the centres and the progress made so far.
Through Mahama Cares, the government aims to reduce the burden of NCDs in Ghana by combining patient support with the development of modern treatment facilities, ensuring comprehensive care and improved health outcomes.
