President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned a new LPG carrier, MT Asharami Ghana, in the Republic of Korea, describing the vessel as a major boost to energy supply and distribution in Ghana and the wider West African region.
The vessel, developed under the West Africa Gas Limited initiative, is expected to strengthen the transportation of liquefied petroleum gas and improve supply reliability for countries that rely partly on imports.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on Thursday, March 12, President Mahama said the project demonstrates strong collaboration among industry partners working to expand energy infrastructure and improve access to cleaner fuel across the region.
“It is a profound honour to join you here today in the Republic of Korea—a nation globally renowned for its excellence in shipbuilding, maritime engineering, and technological innovation—as we witness the commissioning of the Sahara LPG Vessel,” the President said.

He noted that LPG remains a key alternative to traditional fuels such as charcoal, firewood and kerosene, which are still widely used in many African households.
The President also indicated that Ghana currently produces about half of its LPG requirements locally, with the remaining portion imported to meet national demand.
He commended Sahara Group and its partners for their role in advancing energy infrastructure, expressing optimism that the new vessel will help strengthen LPG supply chains and support the region’s growing energy needs.
