President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to ask the finance minister, Cassiel Ato Forson to allocate funds for the commencement of the second phase of the Berekusu Sea defense to protect victims of future tidal waves.
Recent tidal waves in Agavedzi, Volta Region, have displaced 300 people and affected 51 households which the President sees as a call for action.
Residents of Agavedzi and other affected communities have long suffered from the impact of tidal waves, with recurring incidents displacing families and destroying properties.
Many have called for immediate government intervention to construct a sea defense barrier to protect coastal communities from further devastation.
During a visit to the affected communities, Mahama expressed concern over the destruction and emphasized the need for urgent intervention. He announced plans to request funding from the finance minister to initiate the second phase of the Berekusu Sea Defense Project to mitigate future disasters.
“There are two things we need to do; start building phase two of the defense wall and, at the same time, resettle those whose houses have been affected. So, we will look for a more suitable site for the resettlement project,” Mahama stated.
