President John Dramani Mahama is today, Friday, October 3, 2025, hosting a high-level dialogue with more than 50 civil society organisations (CSOs) at the Jubilee House in Accra to deliberate on the worsening menace of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
The meeting comes at a time when pressure is mounting on government to scale up the fight against galamsey, with advocacy groups urging the declaration of a state of emergency in mining communities devastated by pollution, water contamination, and land degradation.
In an invitation signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, the dialogue was described as an opportunity for “frank and constructive engagement” between government and civil society, aimed at harnessing collective expertise to address the national crisis.
Among the organisations participating are the Catholic Bishops’ Conference, IMANI Ghana, the Ghana Bar Association, the Ghana Journalists Association, and Eco-Conscious Citizens.
Meanwhile, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has disclosed that all water bodies and forest reserves have now been designated as security zones as part of new measures to clamp down on illegal mining.
