President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister for Transport to investigate and resolve concerns over excessive administrative charges imposed by shipping lines operating in Ghana.
The directive follows complaints by the Institute of Freight Forwarders, which described the charges as a burden on importers and a barrier to trade efficiency.
Speaking during a meeting with the leadership of the Institute, President Mahama said the law requires that all fees and levies collected within Ghana’s jurisdiction must receive parliamentary approval.
“We charged the Minister of Transport to go into it and sit with the shipping lines and look into those administrative charges,” the President stated.
He added that the government had consulted the Attorney General and confirmed that fees and levies must be ratified by Parliament before being imposed.
“You cannot charge any fee or levy within the territories of Ghana without parliamentary approval. That must be rectified as soon as possible.”
President Mahama said the Ministry of Transport and the Attorney General have been tasked to work together to ensure that all charges are legally approved.
He emphasised that the move aims to bring relief to businesses and promote a more competitive and efficient shipping industry.
