The Deputy General Secretary of the Governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Foyo Gbande, has strongly refuted allegations made by Minority Leader Osahen Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, who accused him of instigating violence during the July 11 parliamentary rerun in Ablekuma North.

In a press statement released on Saturday, July 12, Gbande described the claims as “blatantly false,” “reckless,” and “politically motivated,” expressing shock that such accusations would be made in the public domain.

“The claims that I incited or directed acts of violence at 19 polling stations are entirely untrue,” Gbande asserted. “I categorically deny any involvement in, or prior knowledge of, the incidents mentioned. Such conduct from a trained lawyer and senior legislator shows a troubling disregard for truth and the ethical standards required of public office holders.”

Providing clarity on his presence in the constituency on election day, Gbande explained that he was there solely for routine monitoring of the electoral process and had no involvement in any disturbances. He noted that he was not at the scene of the reported altercation involving former MP and Minister, Mavis Hawa Koomson, but was called in afterward.

He further stated that he assisted in arranging medical attention for Koomson by facilitating her transportation to the hospital.

“I unreservedly condemn all acts of lawlessness and call on the Ghana Police Service to conduct thorough, impartial investigations into the events of July 11,” he said. “Justice and accountability must be upheld to preserve the credibility of our democratic processes.”

Gbande revealed that he has referred Afenyo-Markin’s remarks to his legal team for review and is considering appropriate legal action to defend his integrity.

He also appealed to the Electoral Commission and other relevant institutions to strengthen electoral oversight and safeguard the reputations of political actors from unfounded attacks.

“Disinformation and character assassination pose a serious threat to our democratic discourse,” he warned. “I remain committed to peace, inclusive participation, and principled leadership—values that must guide all political stakeholders in Ghana.”

Despite the controversy, Gbande stressed that he remains focused and undeterred, vowing to continue serving with honesty and conviction.

The Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun has drawn widespread public attention amid reports of violence, though official details remain limited as investigations continue.
