President John Dramani Mahama has dismissed the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, along with other top military commanders, in a major shake-up of the Ghana Armed Forces.
A statement from the Presidency announced the appointment of new acting service chiefs, pending consultation with the Council of State. The new appointments, effective March 24, 2025, are as follows:
- Brigadier General William Agyapong – Acting Chief of the Defence Staff
- Brigadier General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu – Acting Chief of Army Staff
- Commodore Godwin Livinus Bessing – Acting Chief of Naval Staff
- Air Commodore Eric Agyen-Frempong – Acting Chief of Air Staff
- Brigadier General Glover Ashong Annan – Acting Chief of Staff
The shake-up comes as part of President Mahama’s efforts to restructure the military leadership. He met with the outgoing service chiefs at the Flagstaff House earlier today, thanking them for their service and assuring them that their expertise would still be valued as Ghana moves forward.
The dismissal of the military heads signals a new direction in the country’s defense strategy under Mahama’s administration. The move is expected to bring fresh leadership into the Armed Forces to tackle emerging security challenges.
