President John Dramani Mahama is expected to swear in seven newly appointed Justices of the Supreme Court today, Thursday, July 3, 2025, at the Jubilee House.
This follows the parliamentary approval of the nominees, despite stiff opposition from the Minority side of the House.
The approved nominees are: Justices Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei, Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh, Senyo Dzamefe, Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo, Philip Bright Mensah, Janapare Bartels-Kodwo, and Hafisata Amaleboba.
Their approval came after a heated debate on the floor of Parliament, culminating in a majority decision in favour of their appointment.
During their vetting, the nominees faced tough scrutiny from members of the Minority, led by Ranking Member on the Appointments Committee, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin.
The Effutu MP also objected to attempts by the Committee Chairman, Bernard Ahiafor, to lay the Committee’s final report before the House, citing unresolved concerns about the nomination process and issues of transparency.
However, the Committee Chairman, who also serves as First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, dismissed the objection, insisting that all concerns raised had been adequately captured in the final report. The Speaker subsequently permitted the report to be laid, clearing the path for the vote.
Though the nominees secured approval through the majority’s endorsement, the Minority has maintained its opposition, stressing that critical concerns regarding the transparency of the process remain unaddressed.
The swearing-in ceremony at the Jubilee House today will mark the formal induction of the seven Justices into Ghana’s highest court.
