The Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has assured victims of the Adum Railway Line Market fire of the government’s commitment to supporting them as they rebuild their businesses.
During a visit to the fire scene on Sunday, March 23, 2025, the minister reiterated the government’s efforts to provide assistance, ensuring affected traders can restart their businesses in a well-structured environment.
She was accompanied by the CEO of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Abigail Kwambea Elorm Mensah, who also pledged financial support for traders.
The devastating fire broke out on the morning of Friday, March 20, 2025, destroying a section of the market from PZ to Blue Light.
Firefighters battled the flames for over five hours before containing the fire and finally brought i the situation under control on Sunday.
While visiting the affected traders, the Gender minister acknowledged the challenges they face and stated that although the government cannot fully cover all losses immediately, it is committed to meeting traders halfway to help them recover.
Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, expressed concern over the increasing incidents of theft in the market following the fire.
He assured the traders that the government is working to enhance security measures to protect their livelihoods.
Some market women are also demanding clarity on whether the government will return the land to them for reconstruction.
However, Dr. Amoakohene stated that no definitive decision can be made until all outstanding issues are addressed in consultation with stakeholders.
In a related development, the Ashanti Regional Security Council is scheduled to meet with Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at the Manhyia Palace on Monday morning to brief him on the fire outbreak and discuss the way forward.
Authorities have assured the public that measures are being taken to restore normalcy and support affected traders as they rebuild their businesses.
