President John Dramani Mahama Thursday reaffirmed his commitment to introducing bold labour-centered reforms aimed at creating decent jobs and ensuring fair wages.
Speaking on the theme, “Striving for peace and stability to drive industrialisation, trade, and decent work for social justice,” President Mahama stressed the need for inclusive policies that benefit workers.
“We are committed to creating a supportive environment that allows you to thrive and help Reset Ghana,” he said.
He added, “Today is a special day for our gallant workers,” Mahama said. “You are the engine of our economy, the builders of our infrastructure, and the innovators who propel us forward.”
This is the first time the president has joined labour groups in celebrating May Day since his return to office in January this year.
During his address, he outlined several government initiatives including the 24-hour economy, the National Apprenticeship Programme, and digital training schemes such as Adwumawura and One Million Coders, which he noted would realise his economic vision of “creating opportunities for decent jobs.”
Mr. Mahama also promised to strengthen labour laws and improve occupational safety, telling workers his government remained, “dedicated to ensuring decent work for all Ghanaians”. This, he said, meant, “fair wages, safe working conditions, and the protection of workers’ rights”.
Acknowledging the prevailing economic challenges, he assured workers of decisive action to tackle inflation, unemployment, and inadequate infrastructure.
He said his administration was determined to address the challenges “head-on”.
