Oti Regional Minister, Hon. John Kwadwo Gyapong, has called for the urgent revival of the Volta Lake Transport Safety Project (VLTSP) following recent boat disasters that claimed several lives.
He made the call when a delegation from Ecozoil Limited, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group, donated 200 life jackets to schoolchildren and residents in the Krachi West District on Friday, October 17, 2025.
The minister commended Ecozoil for its swift intervention and longstanding commitment to promoting safety on the Volta Lake, describing the company as “a responsible partner in national development.”
“Ecozoil has demonstrated what it means to be a responsible partner in national development,” he said. “Their response after the recent tragedy shows compassion, leadership, and a genuine commitment to saving lives. I am ready to support them wherever necessary to ensure this initiative continues.”
Hon. Gyapong urged government and relevant agencies to consider renewing the Volta Lake Transport Safety Project, noting that it had previously helped reduce accidents and improve safety awareness in lake communities.
“This project made a difference. It improved safety awareness and helped reduce accidents. I strongly support its renewal and will work with the relevant ministries and agencies to make that possible,” he assured.
He also emphasized the importance of strengthening water transport safety across the region, which has over 22 percent of its landmass covered by the Volta Lake.
“Transport on the lake must be as safe and organised as transport on land,” he stressed. “We must empower local communities, enforce safety regulations, and ensure that every passenger has access to life-saving tools.”
The minister further highlighted the need for private sector collaboration in sustaining lake safety initiatives.
“Government alone cannot do it all. We need committed private sector partners like the Jospong Group and Ecozoil to help us achieve lasting safety and sustainable development for our people,” he said.
