N/R: Tishegu residents clash over bus terminal construction

There is fuming disagreement between residents of Tishegu over the construction of a bus terminal belonging to VIP Jeoun in the Tamale Metropolis.

Some residents who have their houses close to the terminal are resisting the construction with the rest of the residents in the area standing in support of it.

This led to the disagreeing residents filling a suit at the Tamale High Court to stop the construction.

In view of this, the Tamale High Court has placed an injunction on the construction. This follows a failed attempt by the disagreeing residents to get a response from the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly on its knowledge about the project.

The residents petition the Assembly to find out whether the transport company had acquired a permit from its outfit but the Assembly declined to respond to their petition. This according to the petitioners compelled them to seek redress in court.

The bus terminal belonging to VIP Jeoun is being constructed on two plots of land at the Tishegu residential area which was sold to the company by a resident and a brother to one of the disagreeing residents.

Checks by Starr news saw the first phase of the project at its completion stage but the agitating residents succeeded in bringing it to a halt through a court injunction.

Meanwhile, some residents calling themselves the “the concern youth of Tishegu” on Saturday, June 29, 2019, embarked on a demonstration demanding the continuation of the project.

According to them they stand for the development of the area and will support any developmental project that will come to the area. They indicated that they will not sit aloof to watch anyone to retard the development of the area due to their own parochial interest.

The youth also accuse the complainants of being hypocritical and not interested in the development of the area. Clad in black and red armbands, the youth held placards with inscriptions such as “we need Jobs”, “Tishegu is bigger than anybody”, “Tishegu needs development” among others.

In a statement, Sulemana Iddrisu, the convener of the demonstration, stated: “no resident is against the construction of the terminal as stated by the complainants.”

The statement further called on the complainants to engage the company to deliberate and get an amicable solution to the matter.

On whether the company had acquired a legal permit from the Tamale Metro Assembly, the Northern regional representative of VIP Jeoun, Abdul Karim Issahaku said the company had gone through procedures and had acquired a building permit for the construction.

“We have a permit from metro assembly signed by a metro chief executive,” Abdul Karim said.

Meanwhile, when Starr News contacted the metro coordinating director of TaMA, Abdul Rahaman Baba he confirmed receipt of a petition from some residents of Tishegu on the matter. He also acknowledged the permit application by the company VIP Jeoun but indicated that the decision on whether or not to grant the permit was yet to be arrived at.
