The Government of Ghana has outlined the official programme for the three-day national mourning period declared in honour of the eight individuals who perished in Wednesday’s tragic military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region.
The mourning period, which will be observed from Thursday, August 7 to Saturday, August 9, 2025, comes in the wake of the devastating incident that has plunged the nation into grief.
The Ghana Air Force Z9 helicopter, en route from Accra to Obuasi, lost contact with radar shortly after takeoff on Wednesday morning. The crash claimed the lives of two cabinet ministers, three military officers, and three other high-profile government and party officials.

In a statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, the government announced that the national mourning will begin with a public laying of flowers and lighting of candles at the Ceremonial Garden in front of the Presidency. The public, families, and friends of the victims are encouraged to participate.
This act of remembrance will continue on Friday, August 8, allowing more citizens to pay tribute to the departed.

“The period of national mourning is intended to offer our nation a vital opportunity to collectively mourn and reflect on the profound loss we have experienced,” the statement said.
