Don’t vote for NDC’s Lawyer Bediako, he frustrated Ernest Kumi – NPP Chairman

The Eastern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Jeff Konadu, has launched a scathing attack on the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Akwatia, Lawyer Bernard Bediako Baidoo, accusing him of playing a role in frustrating the late Ernest Yaw Kumi (former Akwatia MP).

Speaking to party supporters after a health walk and campaign rally on Sunday, August 17, Jeff Konadu alleged that Lawyer Bediako, who represented the NDC’s 2024 parliamentary candidate Henry Boakye Yiadom (a.k.a. Okoyo), dragged Ernest Kumi to court in an election petition, challenging the results of the parliamentary elections.

According to him, the prolonged litigation took a toll on the late MP.

“This man [Lawyer Bernard Bediako] was the one who filed the petition on behalf of Okoyo in court to frustrate Ernest Yaw Kumi. He was attending court cases, cited for contempt, and frustrated to the point that he never even received his common fund till he died. Surprisingly, this same lawyer has now pushed Okoyo aside to become the NDC parliamentary candidate. Such a person does not deserve to replace Ernest Kumi as your MP,” Jeff Konadu stated.

The NPP regional chairman urged constituents of Akwatia to reject Lawyer Bediako at the polls, stressing that the late Ernest Kumi’s memory should not be dishonoured by voting for someone he claims contributed to his distress.

The by-election will be contested by Solomon Kwame Asumadu, Bernard Bediako Baidoo Esq, parliamentary candidates for NPP and NDC respectively, and an Independent Candidate, David Ankomah.

A statement signed by Evans Osei Yeboah Tsooboi,
Eastern Regional Communication Officer, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Eastern Region on Sunday, August 17, 2025 demonstrated a strong show of unity and solidarity through a successful Unity Walk held in Akwatia.

He said the walk was led by the Eastern Regional Chairman, Hon. Jeff Konadu Addo, together with all regional executives. They were joined by the National Youth Organizer, Salam Mustapha, as well as constituency executives, electoral area coordinators, polling station executives, and the grassroots supporters and sympathizers. The atmosphere was charged with enthusiasm as thousands of party faithful came out in their numbers to reaffirm their commitment to the NPP.

“A key highlight of the event was the collective endorsement of the party’s parliamentary candidate for Akwatia, Solomon Kwame Asumadu. All potential aspirants and stakeholders in the constituency put aside individual interests and walked shoulder-to-shoulder in support of the candidate, sending a strong and unambiguous message that the NPP in Akwatia is united. The chants, placards, and speeches all pointed to one truth; our great party is poised to consolidate its strength in Akwatia and deliver resounding victory in the upcoming by-election” the statement said.

The statement added that, “Eastern Regional Executive Committee wishes to emphasize that the Akwatia Unity Walk has left no doubt in the minds of constituents and observers: Akwatia stands firmly behind the NPP and its parliamentary candidate, Solomon Kwame Asumadu. With unity, determination, and unwavering grassroots support, victory for the NPP is assured come Tuesday, September 2, 2025”.

Meanwhile, NDC is mobilizing for intensive campaign activities in Akwatia ahead of the September 2, by-election.

A statement issued and signed by the Deputy Eastern Regional Secretary of NDC, Kwaku Boateng, on Sunday called on all party faithfuls to join the campaign activities in Akwatia.
