The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced plans to rename the party’s headquarters after its late founder, former President Jerry John Rawlings, as part of efforts to embed his legacy more deeply into the party’s institutional framework.
At the 46th anniversary celebration of the June 4 uprising in Odumase Krobo in the Eastern Region, NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia revealed that the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) has proposed to declare the month of June as “NDC Month.”
This move, he explained, would serve as a period to commemorate the party’s anniversary and other key activities.
Additionally, Asiedu Nketia disclosed that steps are being taken to rename the NDC national headquarters after Rawlings, in recognition of his pivotal role in Ghana’s political history and in founding the party.
He further added that the party will initiate the necessary procedures to secure all approvals required to formalise the renaming.
“We would, as a party, amend our constitution to include the birthday of our founding father as one of the significant days for the party. That is June 22. Beyond that, moves are underway to rename the party headquarters as Jerry Rawlings’ house because this is a practice all over the world.”
“Party headquarters are named after the founders of those parties, and Ghana cannot be an exception. So we will begin all the processes that are necessary to secure all the approvals within the party, so that the national headquarters becomes Rawlings House,” he stated.
The June 4 uprising, led by then Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings, marked a turning point in Ghana’s political landscape, characterised by calls for probity, accountability, and justice in the face of corruption and misgovernance by the ruling elite.
This year’s commemoration, themed “Resetting Ghana: Reflecting on June 4,” brought together prominent figures of the NDC, political leaders, and members of the Rawlings family to reflect on the enduring legacy of the event and its leader.
