Akwatia By-election: NDC urges police to arrest anyone who foments trouble

The NDC says anyone who breaks the law during the Akwatia by-election must face arrest, regardless of party.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is calling on the Ghana Police Service to clamp down on any individual who foments trouble, regardless of political affiliation.

At the vetting and balloting of parliamentary aspirants in Koforidua, director of Protocol for the NDC, Ludwig Hlordze, said the police will as usual be in charge of security during the election and will deal with anyone who will foment trouble.

The call comes in response to threats by the NPP to deploy its own security due to alleged attacks on its members during the Ablekuma North by-election.

“We are going there with an open mind and we also call on the IGP and the Minister for Interior and Minister of Defence to make sure that every citizen is protected at the Akwetia by election. We’ve spoken to our supporters that anybody who fell foul of the law will be handed over to the police and we’ve given the police all the powers, even at our primaries, right down to the main election to make sure that they take charge of the election” Said Ludwig Hlordze.

He is confident that the NDC will win the Akwatia seat.

The NDC parliamentary primary for the Akwatia constituency is scheduled for Monday, August 4, 2025. Three aspirants are contesting for the slot.

Balloting results on Thursday saw Lawyer Bernard Bediako Baidoo picking the number one spot, followed by Erasmus Koney Ali, popularly known as Asanka, in the second position, and former MP Henry Boakye Yiadom, also known as Okoyo, in the third.

Lawyer Bernard Bediako Baidoo is optimistic of winning, but says he will rally behind any other person who emerges as winner.

Erasmus Koney Ali alias Asanka believes his track record as Assembly member, presiding member and constituency youth organizer , as well as his involvement in various developmental projects makes him the ideal candidate for the NDC

Henry Boakye Yiadom, on his part, wants an opportunity to continue developmental projects he started as MP during his tenure between 2021 to 2025.

The Akwatia by-election is scheduled for September 2, 2025, following the passing of the late MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi.
