New leadership takes office at RTI Coalition, Ghana

The Coalition on the Right to Information, Ghana (RTI Coalition), has announced the election of its new 15-member Steering Committee, tasked with guiding the network over the next two years.

This diverse committee comprises representatives with a wealth of experience in open governance through access to information.

Mary Addah of the Ghana Integrity Initiative assumes the role of Chairperson, and Sammy Obeng from Parliamentary Network Africa is appointed Vice Chairman.

The RTI Coalition, representing over 100 civil society organizations and human rights activists across Ghana, is committed to advancing transparency, ensuring government accountability, and promoting greater citizen participation in democratic processes through the right to information legislation.

The Steering Committee is composed of the following esteemed individuals:

Mary Addah (Executive Director, Ghana Integrity Initiative) – Chairperson,Sammy Obeng (Executive Director, Parliamentary Network Africa) – Vice Chairperson
Mina Mensah (Head of Africa Office, Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative) – Secretariat of the Coalition,Jonathan Osei Owusu (Executive Director, POS Foundation), Gloria Hiadzi (Executive Secretary, Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association)
and Jerry Sam (Executive Director, Penplusbytes).

The rest are ; Beauty Emefa Narteh (Executive Secretary, Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition), Naa Ayele Sekyere (Snr. Industrial Relation Officer & Parliamentary Liaison, Ghana Trade Union Congress), Modupe Anorkplim Nukunu (Executive Director, Human Rights Advocacy Centre),
Genevieve Partington (Country Director, Amnesty International – Ghana),
Siapha Kamara (Chief Executive Officer, SEND Ghana), Collins Osei (Executive Director, Save our Environment Foundation), Adizatu Moro Maiga (Media Foundation for West Africa),
Adam Abdul Wahab (Ghana Federation of Disability Organization)
and Thomas Benarkuu (MIHOSO International Foundation)

As Ghana approaches the 2024 elections and with nearly four years into the implementation of the Right to Information Act, 2019 (Act 989), the RTI Coalition looks ahead to consolidating citizens’ fundamental right to information.

The Coalition expresses sincere gratitude to the outgoing Steering Committee, led by Dr. Kojo Asante (CDD-Ghana) and Vice Chairperson Mina Mensah (CHRI Africa), for their commendable leadership over the past three years.

[8:26 PM, 11/9/2023] Kojo Ansah Sasraku, II: E/R: Five bodies including 3 children retrieved in Afram River Canoe accident

Five dead bodies including three(3) children have been retrieved from the Afram River in the canoe accident .

The devastating incident occured at approximately 7:20 pm Wednesday November 8,2023 near Agyata community in Afram Plains South district of Eastern region.

The unfortunate event happened as 12 individuals attempted to cross from Kyireba to Burger Akura along the Afram River.

The passengers on the canoe comprised 2 male adults, 4 female adults, and 6 female children

However, the canoe capsized during the journey, resulting in a grim outcome.

Two (2 ) males, 1 female adult, and 3 female children, totaling 6 individuals managed to escape the tragic fate.

Five(5 ) out of the six (6) missing passengers have been retrieved by rescue team of Police and NADMO with support of local fishermen on Thursday.

The five bodies retrieved include three(3) children and two(2) adults.

However, efforts are underway to retrieve the last missing person, and the community is rallying together in support.
