Former Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Kofi Ofosu-Nkansah, has cautioned that the Mahama administration’s newly launched Nkoko Nketenkete poultry programme could fail if beneficiaries are not adequately trained.
President John Mahama recently launched the flagship poultry revitalisation initiative, Nkoko Nkitinkiti, in Kumasi. The programme aims to reduce Ghana’s heavy dependence on imported frozen chicken by distributing three million birds nationwide.
The initiative is designed to expand poultry production into homes, schools, and communities, creating a sustainable source of income and boosting local industry.
Under the first phase, each beneficiary will receive 50 chicks, feed support, and technical guidance to help them start and maintain small-scale poultry operations.
While praising the concept, Mr. Ofosu-Nkansah, speaking on Kasapa FM on Wednesday, November 19, stressed that the programme’s success hinges on proper capacity-building for participants.
“The nkoko nketenkete policy will turn into SADA Part 2 saga if we fail to train the beneficiaries in how to keep the birds…” he warned.
He further urged the government to engage veterinary professionals to support farmers across the country, noting that technical expertise will be critical to ensuring the survival and productivity of the birds.
