NPP Youth Wing condemns arrest of party activists, calls for release

The NPP Youth Wing has accused the police of political bias and demanded the immediate release of three party sympathisers arrested over alleged threatening videos.

The National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has slammed the Ghana Police Service over the arrest of TikTok personalities Fante Comedy and AY, along with social media activist Sir-Obama Pokuase, calling the move an “undemocratic attack” on free speech.

In a statement signed by National Youth Organizer Salam Mustapha, the group said it was “shocked” that the police would, in its words, “waste resources” to detain young people over comments made in a viral video, which they admit were “unsuitable for the moment” but posed no real threat.

According to the police, Fante Comedy and AY were picked up for commentary and threats of harm directed at President John Mahama, while Sir-Obama Pokuase’s arrest is tied to ongoing security operations targeting illegal weapons possession, after he allegedly circulated images and videos showing individuals brandishing such arms.

The NPP Youth Wing, however, accused the police of double standards, claiming that under the current administration, officers have turned a blind eye to what they called “worse reckless statements” from National Democratic Congress (NDC) activists.

The group argued that the arrests reveal a “partisan and intolerant” posture toward those perceived as NPP sympathisers.

The statement also referenced the July 11 violent attack on MP for Awutu Senya East, Hawa Koomson, and other NPP members during the Ablekuma North Constituency rerun, alleging that the attackers—whom they described as NDC members—remain free with no arrests made.

“The Ghana Police Service should not be a wimp for the executive,” the statement read. “ Your motto is ‘Service with Integrity’, so we ask you, where is the INTEGRITY you speak off?”

The Youth Wing is demanding the “immediate and unconditional” release of the three detainees, saying their continued detention “flies in the face of Ghana’s democratic principles.”
