The Eastern Regional Executive Committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has refuted reports suggesting that Mavis Kumi, widow of the late Akwatia MP, Ernest Kumi, intends to contest the upcoming by-election in the constituency.
In a statement released on Tuesday, July 15, the party described the claim—circulating via a flyer on social media—as “false, misleading, and deserving of utmost contempt.”
The statement clarified that Mrs. Kumi has no interest in political activity at this time.
“As a Party, we have been in close contact with Mrs. Mavis Kumi and her immediate family following the unfortunate passing of her husband, Hon. Ernest Kumi, the Member of Parliament for the Akwatia Constituency,” the statement urged.
The party called on its members, supporters, and the general public to disregard the circulating flyer, stating that it neither reflects Mrs. Kumi’s intentions nor has the endorsement of the party at any level.
“We respectfully urge all Party members, sympathizers, residents of the Akwatia Constituency, and the general public to disregard the flyer in circulation. It does not reflect the wishes or intentions of Mrs. Mavis Kumi, nor has it been sanctioned by the Party at any level.”
The party also condemned the spread of such misinformation, warning that it only adds to the pain of a grieving family.
Mrs. Kumi’s husband, Ernest Yaw Kumi, affectionately known as the “Akwatia Star Boy,” passed away on Monday, July 7, 2025, reportedly from a suspected heart attack.
Mr. Kumi was elected in the December 2024 general elections and was serving his first term as Member of Parliament for Akwatia.
His victory, in one of the most hotly contested seats in the Eastern Region, was hailed as a major gain for the NPP.
The party has since urged the public to keep Mrs. Kumi and her family in their thoughts and prayers.
