Deputy National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), George Krobea Asante, has asserted that the election of flagbearers within the party is far from random or emotionally driven, stressing that delegates always make strategic choices based on timing, temperament, and long-term suitability.
Speaking on The Verdict with Isaac Addae on Starr 103.5 FM on Tuesday, August 5, Krobea Asante said that the NPP’s internal elections follow a thoughtful pattern, contrary to perceptions of disunity after tight contests.
“They know what they are looking out for. They know who has the temperament. They know who can accept, at any given chance, who is the best candidate to present,” he stated.
He cited the progression of leadership within the NPP over the years as evidence of this deliberate pattern. From former President John Agyekum Kufuor to President Nana Akufo-Addo and now Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Mr. Asante said the party has consistently made careful decisions about its leadership.
“President Kufuor and Nana Addo contested, they did it for Kufuor. Later, they gave it to Nana Addo. When President Kufuor was exiting, they gave it to Nana Addo. Then Nana Addo left, Dr. Bawumia took over,” he recounted.
He dismissed the idea of post-primary truces as unnecessary, explaining that losing candidates are not sidelined but may be seen as not being due yet.
“Any NPP delegate will never get a truce. And after a truce, that does not mean they don’t love or like the other candidates. It is just so because maybe their time is not yet up,” he said.

Mr. Asante concluded that NPP delegates understand the weight of their decisions and are not swayed by short-term excitement or media narratives.
“When you follow NPP elections, you don’t worry your head. The party delegates know who qualifies to be there at any given time,” he noted.
