Lecturers from the University for Development Studies (UDS) in Tamale have publicly expressed their support for John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), ahead of the upcoming 2024 general elections.
In an open letter addressed to Ghanaians, the lecturers shared the reasons behind their endorsement, citing dissatisfaction with the current governance under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the series of scandals that have marred the administration.
The letter, signed by a group of concerned UDS lecturers, emphasised that the views expressed were not an official stance of the entire academic community but were reflective of the concerns shared by a significant number of their colleagues.
They explained their moral obligation to speak out on issues affecting the country, particularly concerning the state of governance under President Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
The lecturers criticised the NPP government for its handling of multiple scandals, such as the PDS scandal, the Agyapa deal, the failed Ameri deal, and alleged corruption within the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).
They particularly singled out Dr. Bawumia, accusing him of being at the center of these controversies and of using his position to enrich himself and his associates at the expense of the Ghanaian people.
The lecturers called on Ghanaians to vote for Mahama and the NDC in the December 7 elections, stressing that the future of the country lies in choosing a government that upholds the principles of justice and good governance.
