NPP apologises to Mahama, disowns involvement in viral death threats

The NPP has apologised to President John Mahama and denied any involvement in recent viral death threats made against him and the First Lady.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has disassociated itself from recent death threats against President John Dramani Mahama and the First Lady, Lordina Mahama, insisting the party has no connection to the incident.

During a meeting with the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Accra, NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Koduah stressed that the party “knows nothing” about the viral threats circulating on social media and would never sanction such conduct.

“Indeed, there are certain comments that are made by foot soldiers or even people who are not close to the party. But when such unfortunate, condemnable statements are made, it is important for the leadership to distance ourselves and make it clear that this is not the character of our party,” he explained.

Koduah further noted that inflammatory remarks had surfaced from individuals associated with both major political parties, but warned that wishing death on anyone undermines democracy.

“Some are claiming that the NPP is behind it, and some are even saying they expected other people to die. These things are not healthy for our democracy. Death is something that shouldn’t be wished for your worst enemy. So, if anything came from our side, on behalf of the party, we apologise to the NDC through you to His Excellency John Dramani Mahama. It is not the position of the New Patriotic Party, and we never condone such activity,” he added.

NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia described the situation as troubling and urged that threats and counter-threats among the youth must be stopped immediately.

Meanwhile, police investigations into a viral TikTok video at the centre of the controversy have led to the arrest of two suspects, Prince Ofori and Yayra Abiwu, who are currently assisting authorities.

Ofori has been granted bail of GHS100,000 with sureties, while efforts are ongoing to track others involved in producing and sharing the video.
