Political analyst, Dr. Kwasi Amakye-Boateng, has criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for refusing to participate in the Electoral Commission’s (EC) upcoming parliamentary election rerun in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Joshua Kodjo Mensah on Wednesday, July 9, Dr. Boateng said the NPP’s stance has backfired.
“Now they’ve shot themselves in their own foot, given the position they are taking and how vociferous they have been talking about these issues, legalistic as they seem to me.
They can’t go back on their own words. I think they shot themselves in the foot and that’s it,” he stated.
Dr. Boateng further suggested the NPP should have exercised patience rather than rushing to dismiss the EC’s decision outright.
The EC, in a statement dated Wednesday, July 2, announced that fresh elections would be conducted on Friday, July 11, 2025, following months of dispute between the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the 2024 parliamentary election results in the constituency.
The Commission explained that out of 37 polling stations under contention, results from only 18 were duly verified and approved by presiding officers and party agents.
The remaining 19, which lacked proper verification, are to be rerun.
However, the NPP has rejected the decision, describing it as unlawful and threatening legal action.
A court attempt by the party’s parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, to halt the rerun was dismissed by the High Court in Accra, which ruled that the EC is constitutionally mandated to ensure electoral representation and that postponing the process would further disenfranchise constituents.
The Ablekuma North Constituency has remained without a Member of Parliament since the December 2024 general elections due to the ongoing dispute.
The EC has assured the public that it is working closely with the Ghana Police Service to ensure a peaceful and transparent rerun on July 11.
