Director of Communications at the New Patriotic Party, Richard Ahiagbah, has dismissed claims that the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections amounted to a failure, describing electoral loss as a normal aspect of democratic competition.
Speaking on The Verdict with Isaac Addae on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, Ahiagbah said the pressure surrounding the election was tied to high expectations. “Pressure to the extent that we had work to do and people expected us to win, yes,” he admitted.
He warned against equating defeat with incompetence, emphasizing that democracy allows for both wins and losses. “Democracy is not a one-way street. Contests are meant to be won and lost,” he said.
Ahiagbah noted that losing does not imply a lack of effort. “If you don’t win, it doesn’t mean you didn’t try. It may simply mean the chips were aligned in favour of the other side,” he explained.
He added that the party is now focused on rebuilding and reorganising. “You take it in your stride, reorganise, and come back,” he said.
The NPP suffered a significant defeat in both the presidential and parliamentary contests in 2024. The party is set to elect its flagbearer on Saturday, January 31, as it prepares for the 2028 general elections.
