Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has paid glowing tribute to the eight distinguished Ghanaians who lost their lives in the August 6 helicopter crash, describing them as patriots whose service to the nation will never be forgotten.
Speaking at the interdenominational state funeral on Friday, August 15, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang remembered the late Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, as a man of vision, determination, and unshakable commitment to Ghana’s progress.
She recalled moments of their collaboration, highlighting Dr. Boamah’s passion for public service and his drive to ensure national development.
She said, “Your determination to succeed, your desire, your focus on bravery, your resolve was undoubtedly. Speaking with me, however brief, revealed your firm decision to leave your opportunities for the intended purpose which is serving our country. I should give you those calls to find out how things are going. And if that’s the usual response from some of you, and some of the responses would be, ‘we are trying. Our implementation plan is on course. We are making progress. Our strategies need amendments. It’s not easy. We are doing our best’.”

“Omane, you know that you and I have an outstanding meeting of the Ghana Armed Forces Council. You and I pledged to take our assignment very, very seriously. We agreed, among other things, to avoid tall and cluttered agenda by clearing items expeditiously. You had a positive reaction to the prospect of working more closely with me. I was even more excited by the prospect of learning from you.,” the Vice President added in an emotional tribute.
She urged the nation to draw strength from the lives of the fallen heroes and continue the legacies they left behind.
The August 6 crash claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong, former Obuasi East parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, alongside three Air Force officers—Squadron Leader Peter Baafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
