The government has launched an investigation into the National Service Authority (NSA) following the discovery of 81,885 ghost names on its payroll. President John Dramani Mahama has directed the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) to probe the matter, which raises serious concerns about financial mismanagement under the previous administration.
The fraud was uncovered during a headcount of active National Service personnel, a process initiated by the Minister for Finance as a requirement for clearing allowance arrears dating back to August 2024.
Following the headcount, the Ministry of Finance approved the disbursement of GHS 226,019,224 to 98,145 verified personnel, a figure significantly lower than the 180,030 names previously listed for payments by the NSA’s former management.
President Mahama has also instructed the new leadership of the Authority to implement urgent reforms to prevent similar fraudulent activities in the future.
In a statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, the government reaffirmed its commitment to accountability and transparency in public service institutions.
