Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia is expected to launch the deployment of smart tablets for students of Opoku Ware Senior High School in the Ashanti region on Wednesday 12th June 2024.

The government initiative aims to promote quality senior high school education across the country to also check the burden on parents to end the era of buying textbooks.

At least about 500 tablets will be distributed to students on campus, free of charge effective tomorrow.

According to Education Minister Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum, the rechargeable tablets are preloaded with past questions and textbooks.

“As I’m speaking with you Teachers are being trained. I just visited them and saw how they are being trained so that they can utilize the tablet in their classrooms’’ he said.

Dr. Adutwum further explained that, “we are going to use a learning management system on which is loaded all the content that the students need in order to ensure that the tablet is smooth and more purposeful and is used to improve teaching and learning in the classrooms. So I’m very excited. Tomorrow the vice President will be here and symbolically I will hand over to the students of Opoku Ware Senior High School their tablets’’ he assured.

The Minister clarified that not all schools have received the free smart tablets, contrary to Vice President Bawumia’s earlier claim that all students had been given the device.

Dr. Adutwum, who is also the Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe Constituency, explained that “We are training teachers first. Headmasters have been given guidelines parents for example will counter sign the acceptable policy that the student has to sign to agree that when they get the gadget they will use it for the right purpose. So we have to be deliberate about how these devices are used’’ he emphasized.

He disclosed that all the devices for the students are in the country and are being kept in their warehouses “we have warehouses full of them which we can allow any media to see. Our goal is to make sure that distribution goes smoothly, and that student will use the tablet for instructional purposes. So we are doing the distribution in phases. Phase one schools have received theirs Phase two is ongoing so every school will receive the tablets’’ he re-emphasized.

As part of Vice President Dr. Bawumia’s three days to the Ashanti region, the Vice-President will equally inspect the installation center of the school smart Classroom to inspect the smart board installed to improve teaching and learning activities.
