Leader for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Caucus, Afenyo Markin has asserted that the NDC Members of Parliament unlawfully removed the name tags on their seats to occupy the seats.
The Speaker of Parliament reconvened parliament to address pressing issues that have stalled due to recent tensions in parliament. These pending matters include legislative reforms, and budgetary allocations, among others.
Despite recent confusion as to which party holds a majority in parliament, the NDC MPs have currently occupied the majority side in parliament, therefore asserting themselves as the majority. The NDC further highlighted that the NPP’s delayed arrival has further fueled parliamentary tensions.
However, due to the absence of the NPP MPs, the Speaker of Parliament has once again adjourned parliament, the House lacked the necessary quorum to conduct business due to the absence of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MPs).
Addressing the media, the leader of the NPP Caucus, Afenyo Markin accused the NDC MPs of unlawfully removing the name tags from the seats of the NPP and taking those seats for themselves.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin stated that the NPP Caucus had arranged with the clerk to place their name tags on the majority side in parliament but the NDC MPs removed them and occupied the seats.
“And again, the clerk this morning, we pre-inspected the chamber. The clerk diligently arranged our name tags where they were. They came and they physically removed them. And this is where, with the greatest respect and in all humility and all modesty, my dear friends in the media, help us to shape opinion in the right way, and get the message across. They (NDC Caucus) came in there and unlawfully removed our name tags. They pulled their chairs to our place and sat on our feet,” the lawmaker noted.
Mr. Afenyo Markin further stated that the NPP Caucus will engage the Speaker in the coming days to resolve issues. He also highlighted the need to cease partisan politics in the chamber to uphold the tenets of democracy.
