Irate residents of Somanya in the Eastern region have vandalized the office of the Electricity Company of Ghana over what they describe as strange bills.
The angry residents earlier caused damages to a pickup truck belonging to the state power distributor before attacking the ECG office forcing workers to run for cover.
According to Starr News sources, the angry residents are protesting exorbitant bills submitted to them by the ECG this month.
An angry resident Philip Tetteh Padi who spoke to StarrFMonline.com said the ECG officials are going around the community disconnecting power to homes without explaining to indigenes the sudden ballooning in their bills.
“I paid GHC100 last month, but this month they brought me a bill of GHC45000. We cannot pay such huge bills. We have embarked on a peaceful protest to seek answers for the quantum and shocking changes,” he said.
Theresa Osabutey, the Public Relations Officer of ECG in Somanya condemned the attack on their office and wondered why the residents decided to resort to violence instead of seeking for explanations to their grievances.
According to her, some changes in the company’s billing systems could have caused the huge bills given to some customers in Somanya.
