In a surprise televised address barely 24 hours after delivering his victory speech, President-elect John Mahama has condemned the ongoing violence and scuffles in some parts of the country after the election.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) leader reminded the individuals involved that there was a laid-down procedure for transitioning power to an incoming administration that had to be respected.
“Transitions of one administration to another create the impression of the vacuum of power, and certain people are compelled to act in their parochial interest instead of the national interest.
“I have received reports of attacks on state offices and installations. While it is unclear who is behind these attacks, I condemn them in no uncertain terms. These acts must be seized immediately,” he said sternly.
He also called on President Akufo-Addo to get the situation under control since he was still commander-in-chief.
“Because state power is still in the hands of the current administration, I call on the president and the security agencies to act decisively to curb the ongoing acts of lawlessness immediately,” said former President Mahama.
The country has witnessed pockets of violence in many areas during and after the December 7 elections. The scuffles have stemmed from misunderstandings at collation centres to attempts by some persons to take over assets of state institutions.
