President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s support for traditional family values, clarifying the status of the Family Values Bill and its alignment with the Christian Council of Ghana.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the Council, President Mahama explained that the bill, which faced legal hurdles during the previous administration, had never been submitted to him for assent.
“During the past administration, somebody filed an injunction against Parliament to prevent the bill from being forwarded to the president for assent. So it was not submitted, and the president did not assent,” he said.
He further emphasised his government’s stance on marriage and family: “Marriage is between man and woman… the family is a foundation of our nation… we are completely aligned with the Christian Council.”

The President said that the Speaker of Parliament has given notice to relay the bill to the House for debate. He assured that if Parliament passes the bill, it will be sent to him for assent.
“If the Parliament of the people of Ghana endorses the bill and votes on it, and it comes to me as president, I will sign it,” he assured.
