Former Member of Parliament for Anyaa-Sowutuom, Dr Dickson Adomako Kissi, has urged professionals across various fields to actively participate in Ghanaian politics to help improve policymaking and governance.
His comments come amid continued discussions about the quality of political leadership and the need for expertise and competence in Ghana’s public institutions.
Speaking to Isaac Addae on Morning Starr, Dr Adomako Kissi said professionals bring specialised knowledge and experience that can strengthen decision-making when they enter public office.
He argued that Ghana needs people with practical knowledge of various sectors to contribute to the formulation of policies that directly affect those sectors.
According to him, the limited involvement of professionals in politics is affecting the quality of legislation, policy decisions and negotiations in the country.
Dr Adomako Kissi said professionals should not remain on the sidelines because political decisions ultimately affect their work and the people they serve.
He cited his own experience in the medical profession, explaining that one of the reasons he entered politics was to contribute to decisions that have a direct impact on his patients.
“Bad insurance policies impact my patients. Likewise, bad products on the market impact my patients. So let me get in, make some impact,” he said.
He therefore encouraged professionals, including accountants, doctors, quantity surveyors and even skilled artisans, to consider political participation as a way of contributing their expertise to national development.
Dr Adomako Kissi stressed that political participation should not necessarily begin at the parliamentary level, noting that professionals can start at the grassroots and gradually build the experience required for higher public office.
He said the involvement of competent professionals could help change the perception and narrative surrounding politics in Ghana.
“Let’s encourage a lot more professionals to get into politicking so that we can even change the narrative of politics in Ghana,” he added.
