Member of Parliament for Pru East, Emmanuel Kwaku Boam, has raised alarm over the growing incidence of armed robbery within his constituency, particularly along the Yeji road.
He said the escalating insecurity has brought economic activities in the area to a near standstill.
In response to the situation, the MP summoned the Minister for Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, to Parliament to explain what steps the government is taking to restore safety in the area.
Addressing the House, the Interior Minister confirmed that 50 police personnel have been dispatched to the area to address the security challenge.
He added that the government is working with local authorities to secure accommodation for the deployed officers.
Speaking to Starr News after proceedings, the Pru East MP revealed that a recent robbery attack led to the tragic killing of a 38-year-old businessman.
“Because you tell people you are going to Kumasi and Accra and back. And just about 20 minutes from your own place, you are accosted in the middle of the road. Before they even ask you, what do you have on you? You are shot. That is how devastating the issue is,” the MP lamented.
According to Boam, the persistent insecurity is not only endangering lives but also eroding business confidence and deterring potential investors.
“In fact, it didn’t start today. It’s more than a decade. We’ve been struggling with armed robbery for the past two decades on the stretch of age. And it tells you that gradually the market, the gains on the market is dwindling,” he said.
The MP emphasized that the situation must not be politicized, insisting that crime affects everyone regardless of political affiliation.
He reiterated his commitment to working with the government to tackle the issue head-on.
