Resign – NDC MP to Amidu

A National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament Daniel Asiamah has suggested to the Special Prosecutor to resign for drawing salaries for no significant work done.

Mr. Martin Amidu at a pubic forum recently said government officials have not been forthcoming with documents he requires to perform, adding he lacks logistics and staff to function effectively.

“The present situation where critical ministries and agencies have failed even with our limited constraints or refused to produce public records on demand to aid the office in critical investigations, offences running into millions of cedis, clearly demonstrates that there is divergence between the president’s vision and that of some of his appointees.

“You ask for information you can’t get it, you ask for docket, the docket cannot be produced. You ask a minister for a record, the record cannot be produced. How do you fight corruption when those appointed by the president who has a vision are not coordinating with the office of the special prosecutor to achieve his mandate? That is the challenge we have to face,” the anti-corruption crusader bemoaned at a National Audit Forum organised by the Ghana Audit Service in Accra.

Speaking on the development, the MP for Buem said they warned the former Attorney General about the frustrations he will face when he takes the Special Prosecutor offer but was adamant.

“Martin Amidu is afraid because he has taken money for seven months without any work done so far,” Mr. Asiamah said on Morning Starr with Francis Abban.

“Resign,” the opposition MP advised Amidu.

He added: “They’ve made you a suspect for causing financial loss to the State. If they took him to court and say he has caused financial loss to the State what will he say. We told him and he said nobody can touch him. At this particular point that he has not taken much of Ghana’s money he should resign.”

However, his colleague MP for Sekondi Andrew Egyapa Mercer was optimistic the challenges of the Special Prosecutor will be addressed soon.

“The issues will be resolved very soon and Mr. Amidu will be working,” the NPP legislator assured.

“I don’t think we will get to the point where Mr. Amidu will have to resign. Things will be resolved,” Mr. Mercer added.
