The Ministry of Roads and Highways has directed the Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly and the Department of Urban Roads to immediately remove all unauthorized billboards at the Flowerpot Interchange.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 21, and signed by the Head of Public Relations, Nasir Ahmad Yartey, the Ministry expressed concern over the increasing installation of unapproved billboards, describing them as illegal and a breach of the constitution.
The statement noted that the ministry had observed an unauthorized billboard at the interchange and referenced a press release from the Students Loan Trust Fund disassociating itself from the billboard and warning against the misuse of its logo.
According to the Ministry, such installations violate the Ghana Standards Authority’s “Advertisement Specification for Outdoor Signs” (GS 847:2019), relevant sections of Act 540, and the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (LI 2180).
The Ministry has therefore directed the Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly to work with the Department of Urban Roads to remove the billboard immediately.
It also urged all assemblies to collaborate with regional road agencies before granting permits for advertisements along road corridors.
A portion of the statement noted, “We wish to remind the public that such installations violate regulations set by the Ghana Standards Authority’s “Advertisement Specification for Outdoor Signs” (GS 847:2019), Section 5, as well as Sections 11 and 15 of Act 540, and Section 188 of the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (LI 2180).
It added. “Through this release, the Ministry calls upon the Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly to work closely with the Department of Urban Roads for the immediate removal of the billboard. We also urge all assemblies to collaborate with the relevant regional road agencies before issuing permits for advertisements or notices along road corridors.”
The Ministry called on the Advertising Association of Ghana to strictly enforce its code of conduct on outdoor advertising structures, stressing its commitment to ensuring road safety and protecting public infrastructure.
