St. Martins Senior High School in Nsawam in the Eastern region is facing serious infrastructure, furniture and transportation challenges.

The challenges have forced some of the students to sleep on the bare floor in an abandoned uncompleted one-storey dormitory amid discomforting congestion.

The situation has been worsened by the continuous damage of the substandard metallic beds in the school.

The school, with a population of about 2000, currently does not have a single vehicle hence students are transported to events with public transport despite the high risk.

The school’s only bus was involved in an accident some six months ago and due to lack of funds it has been grounded.

The school’s deplorable state came to light when its old students visited in partnership with Eastern Konnect – an amalgamated body of Old Students Association of Senior High Schools in the Eastern Region to provide career counseling and guidance for the students.

The facilitators include Scofray Nana Yaw Yeboah, an Entrepreneur and Motivational Speaker also President of Eastern Konnect, Sylvia Inkoom, an astute banker with Stanbic Bank Ghana, Mr  Kojo Akapame, a Law Lecturer both old students of St. Martins SHS.

The career counseling, guidance session

The students were served with enough dose of competencies in self -knowledge, educational, career planning and professional exploration as well as imbibed with the spirit of integrity, discipline and volunteerism.

Mr Yeboah said career guidance is very low in Senior High Schools hence most students become academically stranded in choosing courses at the tertiary level, forcing many to pursue courses contrary to their interest and competence and with limited opportunities.

He advised the students to develop entrepreneurial mentality instead of seeking to be employed by government.

The event was used to commemorate the official dedication and unveiling of St Martin’s senior high school new school gate which was sponsored by Paul Boadi, an old student of the school.
