Dr. Peter Anti Partey, Executive Director of the Institute for Education Studies (IFEST), has called for stronger legal accountability to tackle student violence, following recent clashes among students.
Students from Aggrey Memorial SHS, Adisadel College, Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS), Obrachire SHTS, and Kwanyako SHTS during zonal athletics competitions in the Central Region attacked each other raising alarm over the level of indiscipline currently.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey, Dr. Partey emphasized that traditional corporal punishment is insufficient to address the growing problem of indiscipline in schools.
“We need different modes of first understanding the kind of students we are dealing with and ensuring that we put the fear of law in them.
That is why some of us have said, look, look at a video of the CID boss with the headmaster. Make sure that video goes viral. Let this video be played on all school campuses for them to know that when they engage in these activities, they will be dealt with by the laws of the land,” he stated.
Dr. Partey highlighted that peer pressure, lack of supervision, and the normalization of violent behaviour contribute significantly to the problem.
“So our response to these issues has also contributed to the continuous escalation of the problem,” he added.
He urged authorities and school administrators to prioritize legal and systematic interventions to ensure students are held accountable for misconduct, rather than relying solely on punitive measures like caning.
