Former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, has downplayed the declaration of support by 15 Members of Parliament (MPs) in the Eastern Region for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, insisting it will not affect his chances of winning the majority of delegates in the region.
According to him, the influence of the 15 MPs is insignificant compared to the over 20,000 delegates who will cast their votes in the upcoming contest.
He stressed that his grassroots support base remains strong across constituencies, including those represented by MPs who openly endorsed Dr. Bawumia.
“In the Eastern Region, there are about 20,000 delegates who vote here. In recent days, I noticed a small group — about 10 standing together, which later turned out to be 15. These individuals, led by the MP here, declared that they were supporting someone else,” he explained.
Mr. Acheampong added that the declaration was merely political posturing, revealing that some of the MPs privately reached out to him after their press conference.
“After their press conference, they even called me and said, ‘Dr., you know how it is.’ I responded, ‘The youth of today, you like to play,’” he said.
He maintained that he has already secured the backing of delegates in constituencies represented by the MPs who declared for Dr. Bawumia, expressing confidence that his campaign is firmly on course.
“I have already informed Dr. Bawumia that this year I am standing firm. Those 15 people who betrayed me for another person — I have already won their constituency,” he stated.
Mr. Acheampong, a key contender in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) internal race, emphasized that the support of a handful of MPs cannot derail his determination to win the majority of votes in the Eastern Region.
