Flag bearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has encouraged voters not to reject monetary inducements from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the 2024 general elections approach.
The former President accused the government of amassing significant funds for vote-buying in the upcoming elections.
Speaking at a durbar of Chiefs in Juapong in the North Tongu Constituency as part of his campaign tour of the Volta Region, John Mahama cited the recent Assin North by-election as an instance where citizens accepted money and gifts offered them and urged the gathering to follow suit.
“At first the people were afraid; they said if you chop the money and you don’t vote for them, kpelekpeji (god) will catch you and we told the people, ‘if somebody steals your money and the person brings your money back to you, there is no kpelekpeji matter in this one and so collect the money and chop it’
“[In] Assin North they chopped the money, nobody has died in Assin North for chopping that money so they are going to come with the money and I’m telling you the people of Juapong, North Tongu when the money comes, collect it and chop it because the money is your own money and when you go to the ballot box, vote for the truth,” Mr. Mahama urged.
He reminded Ghanaians about the tough times the country was going through highlighting the right to vote as a crucial tool to change the national course.
