Bekwai Circuit Court in the Ashanti region has sentenced a 36-year-old teacher, John Ankomah Boateng, to 10 years in prison with hard labor for stealing over GHS 238,550 from Bosomefreho Rural Bank Limited in the Ashanti Region.

The court presided over by His Honour Isaac Apietu, handed down the sentence after the accused pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing.

According to the prosecution, led by Detective Chief Inspector Eric Twum, the complainant, David Asare Atianeere, is the Internal Auditor of Bosomefreho Rural Bank Limited.

The accused, a teacher at Freso SDA Junior High School in the Bosomefreho District, was also a customer of the bank.

Between February 9 and February 26, 2024, Boateng fraudulently withdrew a total of GHS 238,550.99 using the GhanaPay app application, despite his account having a balance of only GHS 2.23.

Upon realizing the fraudulent transactions, the bank reported the case to the Ashanti South Regional CID on February 28, 2024. Following investigations, Boateng was arrested on March 13, 2024.

During interrogation, the accused admitted to the crime and disclosed that he transferred various sums of money to individuals for safekeeping, including GHS 10,000 to one Isaac GHS 5,000 to Kwaku, GHS 20,000 to Duah, and GHS 5,000 to one Neymar.

Additionally, he confessed to transferring GHS 40,000 to a travel agent to process travel documents for him.

Boateng was subsequently charged with stealing and arraigned before the Bekwai Circuit Court.

After pleading guilty, the court sentenced him to 10 years in prison with hard labor.
